State of emergency in Jakarta

The worst floods to hit Jakarta since 2007 are expected to get even worse when the city is buffeted by monsoon rains this weekend, according to officials.

Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Agung Laksono announced on Thursday that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had raised the emergency level for Jakarta to “alert” (siaga), the highest level.

“The warning level will remain elevated until conditions improve in Jakarta,” Agung told reporters after a meeting at Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s office with officials from relevant ministries and state agencies.

“Current weather reports say the bad weather is going to stay for the next few days. We need to keep our eyes open,” Agung added.

The alert status authorizes the central government and city administration to take maximum measures to assist flood victims, including the deployment of the police and the Indonesian Military (TNI).

Even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could not escape the wrath of floods, with the President along with Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa inspecting the flooded Presidential Palace. Afterwards, Jokowi declared a state of emergency in the capital until Jan. 27, vowing to take action to prevent flooding after the current situation was under control.

The governor said that the emergency decree gave the administration the authority to make quick decisions. “We can, for example, hold a procurement without having to go through the tender process.”

Jakarta was paralyzed on Thursday after a prolonged downpour caused the Ciliwung River to overflow, leading to massive flooding that inundated the capital’s main thoroughfares and landmarks, halted traffic and brought public services to a halt.

The intense rainfall, according to the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), was attributed to the arrival of the Asian monsoon, which is expected to affect many parts of the nation over the next three days.

(JP/Wendra Ajistyatama)Floody hell: One of Jakarta’s main landmarks, the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle (main photo), was submerged under floodwater on Thursday. (JP/Wendra Ajistyatama)Mulyono Prabowo, meteorology publication chief at the BMKG, was forecasting medium to heavy rain at night until Saturday, with the potential for more intense storms in the week ahead.

Hours of intense rainfall over the last several days in Jakarta and upstream in Bogor, West Java, brought the water level at the Manggarai sluice in South Jakarta, the city’s key flooding bellwether, to 1,030 centimeters on Thursday, exceeding the highest risk level of 950 centimeters.

The sluice directs runoff from the Ciliwung River to the West Flood Canal. Authorities were forced to open the sluice on Thursday to avoid bursting the canal, leading the river to inundate the tony Menteng area of South Jakarta as well as the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta.

Despite that drastic action, a 50-meter section of the canal near Jl. Latuharhari in Menteng gave way later in the morning, flooding nearby railway tracks, Jl. Teluk Betung and the main arteries of the Sudirman Central Business District, Jl. Jend. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin.

Officials say that at least 15,423 people have taken refuge at 68 evacuation centers as of Thursday night and more than 114,000 people were affected by flooding in 73 subdistricts across the capital.

Vast swaths of nearby Depok, West Java, were also inundated.

The Jakarta Police said that at least 14 people have died in flood related drownings, landslides or electrocutions in Greater Jakarta since Tuesday.

“We advise citizens to be aware of the situation in their environment and avoid activities where they might drown. If water starts to inundate your house, turn off the electricity immediately,” spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

Rikwanto said people should look to the police’s Traffic Management Center (TMC) and the media for accurate information and be wary of reports on Twitter and other social media websites.

Knee-deep inundation led the Corruption Eradication Commission to evacuate several high-profile graft suspects and convicts from its detention center in the basement of its headquarters on Jl. HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta.

Among the evacuees were Miranda S. Goeltom, former Bank Indonesia deputy governor; Neneng Sri Wahyuni, the wife of graft convict Muhammad Nazaruddin; and politically wired business tycoon Hartati Murdaya.(nad/aml)

STROKE INDICATOR

I URGE ALL MY FRIENDS TO READ & SHARE THIS; YOU COULD SAVE A LOVED ONES LIFE BY KNOWING THIS SIMPLE INFORMATION!!!

Stroke has a new indicator! They say if you forward this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along?

Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and

Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A

SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. Chicken Soup)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is

'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?

Indian gang rape DIES in Singapore hospital

Victim of horrific Indian gang rape DIES in Singapore hospital after doctors reveal 23-year-old student suffered heart-attack and organ failure

  • 23-year-old suffered from severe organ failure in Singapore hospital
  • She also suffered heart attack, brain injury and lung and abdomen infection
  • Eight specialists in multi-organ transplants attended the woman
  • Government promises to publish photos, names and addresses of rapists
  • West Bengal unveils plans for 65 all-female police stations

A young Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in an incident that not only shocked India, but the whole world, died last night at a Singapore hospital.

The 23-year-old has been in a critical state since the attack, suffering multiple organ failure and a heart attack, and despite the efforts of top specialists at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, she last night lost her battle for life.

Her horrific ordeal has galvanized Indians to demand greater protection for women from sexual violence that impacts thousands of them every day, with mass protests ongoing in the country.

In stark contrast to the horrific torture she endured at the hands of her attackers, she 'passed away peacefully' with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side,' said Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth where she had been treated since Thursday.

'The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss,' he said in a statement.

He said the woman had remained in an extremely critical condition since Thursday when she was flown to Singapore from India.

'Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days. She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome.'

Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghanvan told reporters that the scale of the injuries she suffered was 'very grave' and in the end it 'proved too much.'
He said arrangements are being made to take her body back to India.

She and a male friend were traveling in a public bus on December 16 evening when they were attacked by six men who raped her and beat them both. They also inserted the rod in her body, stripped both naked and threw them off the bus on a road.

It comes as another rape victim in India is believed to have committed suicide after police took 14 days to register her case and a further 30 days to make an arrest.

Earlier today doctors reported that the gang-rape student was already 'struggling against the odds following a heart attack, a lung and abdominal infection and significant brain injury.'

But by late Friday, the young woman’s condition had 'taken a turn for the worse' and her vital signs had deteriorated with indications of severe organ failure, said Dr. Kelvin Loh, the chief executive officer of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth hospital.

'This is despite doctors fighting for her life including putting her on maximum artificial ventilation support, optimal antibiotic doses as well as stimulants which maximize her body’s capability to fight infections,' he said, adding that family members were by her side.

Police have arrested six people in connection with the attack and they are all remanded in custody.

She was travelling in the virtually empty bus with a male friend when they were attacked. The assailants stripped them both after the assault and threw them out on the road.

The Indian government responded to days of violent protest at the attack by promising to make public the photographs, names and addresses of convicted rapists.

While the woman chief minister of India's West Bengal state Mamata Banerjee, unveiled plans today for 65 all-female police stations.

He was found on the ground during the protests. Eight people have been arrested and charged in connection with his death.

His relatives, speaking on Al Jazeera, blame 'the people' for his death.

The rape has triggered widespread outrage and calls for ensuring the safety of women who are subject to sexual harassment ranging from groping to rape every day across India.

The Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh said: 'The issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government.'

India's Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in a statement that the government, which is funding and overseeing the victim's treatment, had decided to send her abroad on the recommendation of her doctors.

'Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us,' he said.

Meanwhile, authorities in India are attempting to stem any further violence from demonstrations that erupted in reaction to the rape.

Police have barricaded streets, blocked metro stations and increased their presence in the city centre of New Delhi.
One police officer has been killed during the protests. A 47-year-old married father of three died after three days' treatment in hospital, according to news service Al Jazeera .

'It is the fault of the people. He was only doing his duty and following police orders. But the public attacked him and killed him so the people are responsible,' one relative said.

Police said an autopsy showed the officer had a heart attack that could have been caused by injuries suffered during violence at the protest.

An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the officer was running toward the protesters with a group of police when he collapsed on the ground and began frothing at the mouth and shaking. The journalist said two protesters rushed to the officer to try to help him.

As news of the horrific assault reached the public in India, outraged and disgusted civilians took to the streets in protest.

Across the country there have been demonstrations, including candle-lit vigils and street protests with placards, chants and road blocks.

During the days of protests, reports reveal more than 100 people and about 70 officers have been hurt.

Police have used batons, teargas and water cannon to try and disperse the demonstrators after the authorities attempted to limit the public gatherings.

The Government has faced criticism for the use of force against protesters, the failure to implement laws to protect women in India's 'rape capital' and for how slow it has been to respond to the strength of feeling.

But it looks like there is no end in sight for the demonstrations, however, as another march took place today in the city.

Those taking part were demanding a government crackdown on the daily harassment Indian women face, ranging from groping to severe violence.

Protesters demanding safer public transportation for women and the resignation of Delhi's police commissioner tried to march to the major India Gate traffic circle in central Delhi before being stopped by police in riot gear manning barricades.

Protesters carried signs reading, 'Immediately end rape culture in India' and 'Zero tolerance of violence against women'.

Rape victims rarely press charges because of social stigma and fear they will be accused of inviting the attack. Many women say they structure their lives around protecting themselves and their daughters from attack.

Some protesters have called for the death penalty or castration for rapists, who under current laws face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged today to take action to protect the nation's women.

Singh's government set up two committees in response to the protests. One, looking into speeding up sexual assault trials, has already received 6,100 email suggestions. The second will examine what lapses might have contributed to the rape - which took place on a moving bus that passed through police checkpoints - and suggest measures to improve women's safety.
'Let me state categorically that the issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government,' Singh said at a development meeting. He urged officials in India's states to pay special attention to the problem.

'There can be no meaningful development without the active participation of half the population, and this participation simply cannot take place if their security and safety is not assured,' he said.

Singh previously came under fire for remaining largely silent after the rape. He issued a statement for the first time on Sunday - a week after the crime.

The horrific sexual assault, which took place on a bus on December 16, in New Delhi, lasted 40 minutes, according to the Gulfnews.com, which states the men involved allegedly tricked the woman to board the bus.

B.D. Athani, the medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where the woman had been treated, said she suffered severe intestinal and abdominal injuries, underwent three surgeries and had parts of her intestines removed, according to the Press Trust of India.

'With fortitude and courage, the girl survived the after-effects of the injuries so far well. But the condition continues to be critical,' he was quoted as saying.

Cara Sembelihan Yang manusiawi

Penyembelihan Hewan menurut Syariah vs Barat

Penyembelihan Menurut Syariat Islam

No feeling of pain at all!” (tidak ada rasa sakit sama sekali!).

Keempat

Bukan Ekspresi Rasa Sakit!

(QS Al-Ma'idah: 3)

Banana health benefits are comparable to any other type of fruit.

Banana health benefits are comparable to any other type of fruit.

In fact, bananas have several positive benefits that many other fruits do not have.

These yellow-skinned fruits are ideal for health because they have a sweet taste that most people enjoy.

Because of this, it is easy to implement bananas into a daily diet.

Bananas are also convenient because you can carry them with you whenever you are in a hurry.

Knowing the banana health benefits and the other positive things that bananas can be used for will likely give you a new appreciation for this popular fruit.

A Banana a Day…Instead of eating an apple each day for optimum health, the adage should state that a banana each day keeps the doctor away.

The banana health benefits far outweigh those of the apple because it has many more vitamins and nutrients than their round counterparts.
