Govt to post pictures of students who skip school on website to shame them

MALACCA: In a bid to curb rising truancy here, the state government will create a website for the public to post pictures of errant students to shame them.
State Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the state authorities were collaborating with IT experts to create the dedicated website.
“Pictures of students loitering in shopping complexes will be posted on the website,” he told The Star yesterday.
Gan said the state needed “tangible evidence” to counter the menace which has been on the rise.
“Once the picture is provided to us, we will also print and produce the proof for the parents. Many are unwilling to accept what their children have been up to,'' he added.
Gan said secondary schools here had a database of their students with details of the parents.
He said students playing truant usually put on another shirt or blouse to avoid being identified.
“But they wear their school shoes and pants and we know who they are.”
Gan noted that the lepak culture was also beginning to catch up among female students who spent hours at shopping complexes instead of attending classes.
“During a recent swoop, dozens of students, both boys and girls, were caught red-handed loitering at a famous shopping complex in the city centre. Some were even walking about in full uniform,'' he said of theOps Ponteng crackdown.
Gan identified Dataran Pahlawan, Mahkota Parade, Melaka Central and the Batu Berendam commercial hub as the popular hangouts.
